The Year She Put Down
Elena arrived still carrying the year — in her shoulders, in the way she couldn’t quite sit down. The retreat sat waiting in the hills, the harvest already in: worn boots by the door, a basket of dark fruit at rest in the last of the sun.
She walked the path in slowly, the valley going gold around her, and something began to loosen. Then the room. A stool at the long bench, a single glass of red, the vineyard held quiet behind glass. The light came in low from the west — the close of a cycle, the day letting go. For the first time in longer than she could remember, she wasn’t reaching for the next thing. She sat. She let the place hold her. She stayed.
