Guarded to Given
Elena has worked this land for eleven vintages, most of them alone. The winter she agrees to open it, snow sits to the fence line and the vines are bare wire. Nothing needs her. She stands at the glass with a coffee and wonders what she has just signed.
The first guest arrives in fog, standing at dawn exactly where she used to stand by herself.
By summer the retreat is full — two women with their arms up over her dam, the sun coming through her mist. By April the crew is in the rows, hats down, baskets heavy, the year coming in the way it always has.
She locks up under a full moon. The place is quiet again. It just isn’t only hers.
